A qualitative, descriptive research design with phenomenological insights was used to describe: (a) Thai female adolescents beliefs, expectations, and experiences of romantic relationships- (b) perceptions of dating violence- and (c) what influences their perceptions of dating violence.-Twenty-four female students, aged 15--17, were purposively recruited from a secondary school located in Bangkok to participate in face-to-face audiotaped interviews using an interview guide.

The audiotaped interviews were conducted in the Thai language and lasted approximately 45--70 minutes. A computer software program, ATLAS ti 5.2, was selected to assist in content analysis to identify unique themes within broad aspects of individual, parental, peer, and Thai cultural norms. After the analysis, all codes with quotations were translated from the Thai to English language. A bilingual and bicultural scholar validated all translated selective quotations. One-third of the 24 transcripts were selected to identify inter-coder reliability, and the average of the reliability was .89.-Five themes emerged: (a) characteristics of developing adolescent romantic relationships- (b) influences on adolescent romantic relationships- (c) perceptions of dating violence- (d) cycle of dating violence experiences- and (e) influences on female adolescents perceptions of dating violence.

The Thai cultural identity of good vs. bad girls has been linked to the quality of romantic relationships that could lead to violence. Participants described the meaning of dating violence, including types, severity, pattern, and at-risk populations. Perceived causes of dating violence were identified by individual circumstances, relationship situations, and experiences of family violence. Verbally abusive acts against partners were considered unacceptable but more tolerable than physically and sexually abusive acts.

Most participants showed unwillingness to disclose and to intervene in dating violence. Friends were identified as the first source for help if needed. There was a lack of dating violence discussion between parents and adolescents. The religious beliefs of Buddhism were partly related to the perceptions of dating violence.-Findings of this study provide a foundation for developing culturally sensitive programs for dating violence prevention among Thai adolescents.
